Christmas Movies Filmed In Ottawa

Lights, Camera, Ottawa! Ottawa is a destination city for studios across North America to come and film their Christmas movies. We have the full list and some insider details from people in the industry who have been on set for some of these Christmas films. Read on to learn about the Ottawa film industry and some future classics that were filmed in Ottawa! 

Maps and Mistletoe

This film details the story of a cartographer who falls in love with a world-famous explorer who stops by a small town for the holidays. This movie was filmed entirely in Ontario with most scenes being shot in either Almonte or Ottawa. Most interior shots in the film were shot in Ottawa and if you watch closely you may recognize a few locations. The film also features some subtle nods to Ottawa including an Ottawa Christmas ornament. This film aired Dec 13th on CityTV but can also be found on Lifetime OnDemand or on Youtube through this link! This holiday film is a must-watch for anyone from Ottawa! 

Fatman

This movie came out last year but you can watch it this year on Amazon Prime! This movie stars Mel Gibson and was shot entirely in the Ottawa Valley. Some locations include nearby Carleton Place, Mississippi Mills and of course Ottawa.  WARNING: This is not your average Christmas movie! To save his declining business, Chris Cringle, also known as Santa Claus, is forced into a partnership with the U.S. military. Making matters worse, Chris gets locked into a deadly battle of wits against a highly-skilled assassin. This action-comedy might not be perfect for the whole family but it is another fun film with some big stars, and of course, it was shot in Ottawa! 

Christmas CEO

A small toy company CEO gets a once-in-a-lifetime offer to merge with a mega toy company but will need her estranged ex-business partner's signature to seal the deal. This film stars Marisol Nichols of Riverdale fame and was filmed in Ottawa. This is a fun Hallmark Christmas movie that you do not want to miss!

Under The Christmas Tree

Under the Christmas Tree stars Elise Bauman, Tattiawna Jones and Ricki Lake. This film airs on Dec. 22 at 8 pm on CTV. 

"Marketing whiz Alma Beltran and Christmas tree whisperer Charlie Freemont cross paths when Charlie finds the perfect tree for the Maine Governor’s Holiday Celebration — right in Alma’s back yard. While they initially spar, romantic sparks soon begin to fly between the two women as the enchanting tree and some Christmas fairy dust from the town’s pâtissière extraordinaire bring out the best in them and spark each other to take leaps of faith and fight for love and Christmas magic," said the movie synopsis. Prominent Ottawa locations include Kanata Shopping Centre and Oakhurst Farm! 

Candy Cane Candidate

This film tells the story of natural-born leader Julia returning to her hometown of North Falls for Christmas after her recent political campaign for the city council ended in a landslide loss. It’s the perfect place for Julia’s holiday escape — until she realizes coming home means running into her old high school rival, Parker. When the North Falls mayor resigns, the town holds an emergency election, and Julia and Parker find themselves once again facing off," said the movie synopsis." 

This movie was filmed in The Golden Triangle, Byward Market, Almonte and Kemptville. It releases on Dec. 24 at 8 pm on CTV. 

Why Ottawa?

Ottawa is perfect for Christmas movies. The lights are always spectacular and the city is full of so many beautiful areas which makes it perfect for Christmas movies! The other added bonus is of course the snow. This allows film crews to work throughout the winter on producing their masterpieces. Ottawa will have you feeling like you are in a Christmas movie all season long!
